About the Nominee
Luisa Sonnek is a current candidate for Congress in the Pennsylvania’s 16th District.
She grew up in the Washington DC area. As a world traveler, Luisa lived in Egypt for several years as well as attended culinary school in Paris, France. Upon returning to the United States, she continued her culinary education at La Academia de Cuisine earning a professional culinary degree. She enjoyed a 25-year career as a professional chef before moving to northwest Pennsylvania to be near her daughter, living here for fourteen years.
Luisa holds a BA in Psychology and Fine Arts. She holds a Master’s degree in Community Counseling, and has completed Art Therapy training. Luisa is now working on a PH.D. in Psychology.
As the owner of a small business, Fluid Mind Counseling, in Meadville, Luisa has a passion for helping young people who have experienced trauma and often uses Art therapy as a tool to open avenues for healing. She knows what it is like to work a full-time job, go to school, raise a family and still not be able to make ends meet. She wants to help make sure the system works for everyone not just the privalaged few.
Having been blessed with the opportunity to travel, Luisa has experienced a variety of cultures and witnessed the ways in which we can learn from some of their policies and practices, such as the healthcare systems in France, Italy, and the Middle East.
Luisa’s common sense approach to both life and politics informs her commitment to back programs that help all citizens. Over the years, Luisa has hosted community outreach for a variety of women’s groups, mental health groups, and fair borders and has volunteered at homeless shelter. She has also donated her time to counsel teens in need. Her work counseling other locals in Meadville has shaped the way she sees the mental health issues and socioeconomic inequalities than run so rampant in many regions in Pennsylvania, including our region.
As a small business owner, Luisa is invested in the economic future of northwestern Pennsylvania. She has deliberately designed her practice to help the disenfranchised, particularly young people, and spends her days listening to the difficulties facing those in need.
Luisa’s life experience of overcoming financial hardship in this region of Pennsylvania coupled with her education and career in counseling uniquely equips her with both the knowledge and the intuition to empathize with the struggle of constituents and the motivation to take real action on behalf of Pennsylvanians.
